Our involvement in Papua New Guinea
Westpac was established in Port Moresby in 1910. Then known as the Bank of New South Wales, Westpac opened its second branch soon after in Samarai. It continues to be the first bank with the longest continuous service in Papua New Guinea. Since then, our employees have been actively involved in the community in partnerships with various organisations.
In recent times, Westpac has been involved in a variety of sponsorships and community-based initiatives. Some include:
- Westpac Women in Business Awards
- The Salvation Army
- Port Moresby General Hospital, in particularly Ward 4B
- Susu Mama's
- Cheshire Homes
- Laloki Hospital
Westpac is a corporate member and a supporter of the following:
- Transparency International
- Port Moresby Chamber of Commerce & Industry
- Lae Chamber of Commerce
- Western Highlands Chamber of Commerce & Industry
- Institute of National Affairs (INA)
- Business Coalition Against HIV & AIDS
- Business Council of PNG
- Australia Papua New Guinea Business Council
- PNG Institute of Directors
- PNG Chamber of Mines and Petroleum
- Institute of Business and Banking Management
- PNG Sports Federation through the Trukai Fun Run
Our strategy for getting involved in the community is simple. We embed community involvement into our business model, so that in effect, it becomes part of our organisational culture - the way we do things.
A great example of this is our employees' involvement with Ward 4B of the Port Moresby General Hospital. Employees raised much-needed funds and provided food and bedding items to patients at the HIV/AIDS ward. They personally visit patients in the ward which complements the practical aspect of their association with the hospital.
Senior management is also involved in the PNG Business Coalition Against HIV & AIDS.
We are also members of or signatories to a number of multi-stakeholder and international organisations and agreements dedicated to raising corporate responsibility performance.
