From Graduate to Financial Markets Dealer: Nicholas' Story

From Graduate to Financial Markets Dealer, this is Nicholas Lee's Westpac career journey.

Starting my career at Westpac PNG has been both challenging and rewarding in the best way.

After joining the 2025 Graduate Development Program, I’ve now stepped into a role within Financial Markets as a Dealer, where I contribute to delivering timely outcomes and supporting our customers’ needs in a dynamic environment.

A moment that really shaped my experience came during my time in Financial Markets, when I looked at how we were handling internal processes and communication. It was a small but important part of the workflow. By introducing a more structured approach, we were able to improve clarity and consistency across teams. That experience showed me how even small improvements can make a meaningful difference when it comes to delivering quality outcomes.

One of the biggest advantages of the Graduate Program has been the exposure. Rotating across different parts of the business gave me a much deeper understanding of how the bank operates, and how different teams come together to support our customers.

What stood out to me most was how much you’re trusted to learn, contribute, and grow from early on. You’re encouraged to ask questions, think critically, and find better ways of doing things.

The environment is fast-paced, but also very supportive. There’s a strong culture of knowledge-sharing, and that makes a big difference when you’re still building your confidence and capability.

I’m still early in my journey, but I’m focused on continuing to build my skills and contributing more to the team.

I’m looking forward to what’s ahead and to building a career that adds value for our customers and the business.
